Sexual and Reproductive Project
DEC has a projects and Training unit which undertakes various projects aimed at uplifting the status of women in the society. Emerging needs of women and problems in the area of Sexual and Reproductive. Once this identification is done, special intervention programme are then developed to cater for those needs. Such projects is Traditional Birth Attendants Training.
Traditional Birth Attendants Training:
DEC’s Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) programme is also aimed at alleviating the sufferings of women during child birth, particularly those living in rural areas where there are no health facilities. Traditional Birth Attendants are selected from such rural communities and trained on basic techniques of ensuring safe child deliveries. This programme which started in 1992 is aimed at reducing maternal mortality, level of harmful traditional practices and other problems associated with child bearing.
DEC in collaboration with RAHAMA (a sister NGO) and the states ministries of health undertakes the training and retraining of traditional birth attendants. After the training the TBA’s are provided with kits free of charge to enhance their work. So far about 120 women groups have benefited from DEC’s TBA programme. DEC intends to consolidate trained Traditional Birth Attendants’ network for future training as hygiene promoters in various communities.
